PROJECT: Sacramento River Riparian Mapping

PRODUCED FOR: CalFed, California Department of Water Resources, U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and California Department of Fish and Game

STATUS: Completed

OBJECTIVE: To map riparian vegetation along the Sacramento River and tributary streams within the Sacramento Valley

SUMMARY: In 1991, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) secured 1086 funding to map riparian rivers and streams in southern Shasta County. Our study area included the Sacramento River and tributaries south of Shasta Dam in the Redding Area. Riparian vegetation was polygoned from enlarged black and white air photos at 1"=400' and digitized into a GIS. Tributary streams were included only within the Sacramento Valley (canyon areas within the foothills were not included).

In 1993 Tehama County was added, followed by Butte County in 1995. CalFed provided funds in 1996 to map the remainder of the Sacramento River to Suisun Bay. Included is the Feather (to Oroville Dam), Yuba, Bear, and American Rivers and Cache, and Putah Creeks.

The CalFed portion of the project (south of Butte County) includes the development of digital orthophotos as a mapping base rather than enlarged black-and-white aerial photographs.

Vegetation was interpreted from stereo color-infrared aerial photography taken at one of two scales. Shasta County was flown at 1"=800' and the remainder of the area was 1"=1000' nominal scale.

PROJECT AREA: Sacramento River from Shasta Dam to the Delta, including major tributary rivers and streams within the Sacramento Valley.

DATA DEVELOPED: Riparian coverages for Shasta, Tehama, and Butte Counties were mapped over 1"=400' black-and-white enlargements and referenced to 1"=2000' base data. Digital maps were produced using ArcInfo and ArcView software. For areas south of Butte County digital orthophotographs were developed from 1"=1000' color aerial photography scanned at 400 dpi. For project specifics, see metadata.
