Great State

The Geographical Information Center (GIC) was hired by the West Office Exhibition Design in Oakland, CA to compile a map for a new museum exhibit for the International Agri-Center in Tulare, CA.

Summary

One of the new museum exhibits is called Great State and it will include a giant map of California that shows agricultural land use in the state. Within the map sits a two-sided puzzle for visitors to piece together focusing on the Central Valley. The display will include 14 removable puzzle pieces. One side shows where crops are grown in the Central Valley and the other side shows loss of farmland. The map will be on a tabletop and the base will be a California state map showing topography, major cities and highways. The GIC previously developed a Central Valley agricultural map for an California State Agricultural Research Initiative project in 2002 which we also used for this project. Agricultural types were compiled from GIS files made available from the California Department of Water Resources State Wide Planning and Land Use Program. Loss of farmland files came from the Department of Conservation Farmlands Mapping and Monitoring Program. Our role was to develop digital map files that West Office Exhibition Design could use to complete the exhibit.
